The one principle

Separate “asset-library prep” (done once per asset) from “shot assembly” (done once per shot). Finish each character once as a self-contained rig — with hand sockets and a pose library — so assembling a shot is just: place → snap prop to socket → pick pose → light → shoot. A held prop bound to the hand bone inherits the wrist angle automatically, so it never has to be hand-placed.

Pre-production → Shot Breakdown

Turn the storyboard into a shot breakdown sheet (per shot: location, characters, outfits, props, action/pose, camera, lighting/mood) and de-dupe the asset list into a master asset tracker with a status per asset. Everything downstream keys off these two documents.

Character finalization once per character

Figure + fitted outfit + hair in Daz → bridge to Blender (Diffeomorphic or Daz-to-Unreal) for cleanup & materials → export to Unreal as a Skeletal Mesh on one canonical skeleton. In UE’s Skeleton editor, add hand sockets once (e.g. a right-hand weapon socket) and build an IK Rig for retargeting.

Prop prep once per prop

Static props: mesh + materials. Held props: separate mesh with the pivot set at the grip — they attach to the character’s hand socket. (This is the exact fix for the “floating sword”: grip-pivot + socket, never hand-guessed placement.)

Animation / pose library · per character

Source animation (mocap, marketplace, or hand-keyed in Blender) and retarget onto the character with UE’s IK Retargeter. Stills = single-frame poses. The socketed prop rides the hand through any pose for free.

Load location → place characters → snap props to sockets → assign pose/anim → set time-of-day & mood lighting per the storyboard.

Output

Render with the Movie Render Queuenot viewport screenshots. MRQ gives proper anti-aliasing, depth-of-field, motion blur, and image sequences.

Rules that keep it clean

Held props: socket, don’t bake

Default — attach held props to a hand socket in Unreal. Keeps them swappable; the pose transfers and the prop follows the wrist automatically.

Bake-at-source (skin the prop into the mesh in Daz/Blender) only for a hero prop permanently fused to one character — e.g. a knight whose sword is skinned into his mesh, and is therefore always perfect.

Standardize + retarget

One canonical skeleton per character, plus UE’s IK Rig / Retargeter, means poses and animations are shared across characters with different skeletons — Daz figures can use mocap and marketplace anims.

The single change that prevents the “sword” problem

Set a hand socket on the character’s skeleton in Phase 2, give the prop a grip-pivot in Phase 3, and in the shot just attach-to-socket. Then the Blender/Daz wrist angle drives the blade automatically — no manual prop-nudging, correct from every camera angle.
